RESOLUTION NO.__10-463

 

The following resolution was offered for adoption by the Washington parish Council on motion by   Kenneth Wheat     , seconded   Charles Nassauer .

 

RESOLUTION REQUESTING ASSISTANCE FROM LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES TO PERFORM SAMPLING STUDY OF THE ESTUARY WITHIN THE PEARL RIVER CANAL NORTHERN POOL

 

WHEREAS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pearl River Canal pools are estuary habitats for many species of fish and wildlife, and

WHEREAS, the estuaries of the Pearl River Canal pools provide a source of recreation, education, environment and economic qualities of life to a large multi-parish region, and

WHEREAS, any adverse condition or impact on the estuaries would have a negative effect on the qualities of life mentioned, and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uncontrolled release of water on April 15, 2010 at Lock #3 of the Pearl River Canal caused a drastic draining of the Northern pool located within Washington Parish to water levels never seen since the canal was constructed , and

WHEREAS, such a significant event could have a drastic ripple effect on the qualities of life mentioned herein; beginning with the spawning cycles of the community of native fish within the Pearl River Canal estuary;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the council members of Washington Parish Council convened in regular session,  that Washington Parish goes on record as requesting assistance from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to perform a sampling study of the community structure of the native fish habitat in the Northern Pool of the Pearl River Canal located in Washington Parish to determine what impact the drastic water level conditions may have caused and if estuary restoration may be necessary.

This Resolution having been submitted to a vote, the vote thereon was as follows:
