AN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE SALARY OF COUNCIL MEMBERS IN ACCORDANCE WITH
SECTION 2-05(B) OF THE HOME RULE CHARTER
WHEREAS, Section 2-05(B) of the Home Rule Charter for Washington Parish authorizes the council to change the salary of council members by ordinance;
AND WHEREAS, the salary of council members has not been adjusted since the adoption of the Home Rule Charter for Washington Parish in 1997;
AND WHEREAS, council members are required to pay their own expenses for fuel costs for travel within the parish;
AND WHEREAS, La. R.S. 33:1233 allows members of the police jury to be paid a maximum salary of $1600.00 per month and the president of a police jury to be paid a maximum salary of $2,000.00 per month;
BE IT ORDAINED, that the salary of council members shall be changed as follows: The total compensation individual council members are eligible to receive shall increase from $600.00 per month to $1,000.00 per month, except that the chairperson of the council shall receive $1,200.00 per month rather that the previous amount of $800.00 per month. Accordingly, base compensation for members of the council shall be $700.00 per month, except base compensation for the chairperson of the council shall be $900.00 per month. The per diem amount for attending regular scheduled meetings shall be the same as stated in Section 2-05 (A) of the Home Rule Charter for Washington Parish.
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED, that the effective dated of this ordinance shall be January 1, 2012.
